I loved loved loved the parts of this book where Spigelman put forth her personal mix of philosophy on the subject matter, and the last chapter where she gave pragmatic teaching instruction on how to insert these ideas into the classroom. However, the weaving through of the essay she was revising felt out of place/tacked on, and like a lot of academic texts there's too much time spent laying out what parts of what chapter are going to do what, and building up other scholars' work to do battle against one another, making it a tedious read. It kind of makes me sad, because this book is going to primarily end up in the hands of people who are already converts, whereas people who need to read it won't because of the lack of accessibility to the scholars' cited (secondary school teachers) or because it's an academic text firmly outside their discipline (all non-English higher ed teachers). Chapter 5 should be read by anyone who teaches writing, though. At any level.

A refreshing and creative take to the work of the writing center, one that made me think about how to approach training from a less practical and more holistic stance.
