Review # 1 was written on 2015-07-07 00:00:00 John Fazio This is a good introduction to the Cambridge Platonists -- who I've known about, but have read very little from before (less than I wish I had). There are some very beautiful, poetic passages in here, some great representations of the Platonic Spirit in Christianity (though some more influenced by Descartes than they should have been). I found some good material here, and know more now as to what to look for in the future. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-09-04 00:00:00 James Sanford Some really interesting stuff in here with a compelling case for psychoactive compounds being a core part of the Eleusinian rites, and perhaps a basis for a number of later religious practises. Suddenly the Catholic Eucharist seems a lot more interesting! While some of the evidence was great, some went a bit too far and I found some examples a stretch. I also found later parts of the book a bit dry, but the first half was excellent. |
