The publisher probably was desperate for a book; I can't even tell what the author's point is. The language is dense and unclear, even for a scholarly book. Any teacher of writing will say that unclear writing is the sign of an unclear mind; such is the case with this book. The writer appears to want to posit Twain and others in the South, but I wonder why he didn't just say how the South influenced the works in question instead of using the wordy and ambiguous term "seeking the region."

Never knew that Steinbeck wrote something like this. Propaganda for World War 2. Great intro---talks about how people made illegal printings of this book all through Europe during the war.
