*What* This is one of the first books I picked up when I started as a professional trainer. It remains one of my favorite books on the subject of teaching, training and facilitating. Every new-age teacher, trainer and even an enterprising parent, stands to benefit from this book and would surely treasure it as a reference resource. *Quick Overview* Just after I had read the first 2 chapters, I felt that the title, 'The Trainer's Toolkit', is an understatement for this rich book. No doubt it provides a lot of tools of learning, but importantly, it also puts forward sound principles of teaching and learning. The five principles of Brain-Friendly Learning, as the book puts forward are: 1. Keep it Real!: Make Connection to Real World applications and Challenges 2. Facilitate Creation - not just consumption: Don't feed; allow self-discovery! 3. Honour Uniqueness: Remember, each of us is unique and different. 4. Make it Rich and Multi-Sensory: Let learning happen through diverse senses! 5. State is Everything: Are your learners in a resourceful state of 'Body and Mind'? The best part is that the authors have written and rendered the book following those very principles. So you have activities, exercises, visuals and humor throughout the pages. This makes it a wonderful read! The tools given are a direct application of the five brain-friendly principles. Further, the principles and tools cover the following 2 aspects very well, to ensure wholesome learning. Inside-out - Learning in terms of our brain, memory, and body Outside-in - Learning in terms of the external environment, experience, & facilitator's role *How did it help?* Following are a few tools from the book that I have successfully used in my workshops to the delight of my participants and the sponsors. 'Mind mapping', 'Brain-Gym', 'Anchors' & 'Flow' Of course, there are a lot more tools in the book. Apart from the tools, the 5 principles provide powerful guidance to design, develop content for any workshop or a session. Every teacher, trainer and even an enterprising parent, stands to benefit from this book! Pick one for yourself or for someone with the passion for teaching and learning!! I would like to close with a line I came across in this book: "Mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited."
