This is a reprint of a book originally published in 1984. It has a strong '80s feel to it, though that's not necessarily bad. I love most things to do with the '70s and '80s - yes, when I was a kid. Shauna Travis is chosen by the rather eccentric millionaire, Eustace Starlings, to spend the summer at High Cliff, an old mansion in Trinidad Corners, MA, along with several other artists - a pair of dancers, a sculptor, a poet, a jewelry maker, and a composer to "perfect their talent." This is seen as both an honor and a chance for the artists to make names for themselves. However, there is something sinister going on at High Cliff, including attacks on the artists and their works, and a mysterious death. The writing isn't spectacular: "Shauna brushed a strand of her ebony-black hair away from her light-blue eyes and smiled at her mother." "The familiar face with the full, almost pouting mouth met her gaze over the sweeping swan's neck." The last quote really made me cringe. "Sweeping swan's neck"? Also, one character is repeatedly referred to as a "poetess," which I found amusing. The characters are cardboard and never really come to life. Shauna is supposedly involved in a love triangle, but there's never any doubt which man she will choose. The mystery is rather dull and the villain is very easy to spot early on. The regular price for this mystery is $3.99. I paid $1.99, which is probably a dollar too much. This isn't a bad novel, but it's not a very good one either.
