Review # 1 was written on 2012-08-27 00:00:00 Larry Land One of the best written books I've read on labor & contemporary history in the city of LM, now Maputo. It seems the book and possibly the author have upset some people (as per the amazon.com review of the book), but I think the text is extremely perceptive, well researched and largely accurate. In fact, after having lived in Maputo for a few years, I can appreciate and understand the city's labor dynamics better after reading the book and learning about the colonial labour structures that existed just decades ago. These remembrances leave historical residue, which I firmly believe can be seen even in Maputo's labor market today. Racialized labor divisions, the absence of critical thought about Asian labor, the resurgence of Portuguese workers into the market, etc. are all reminiscent of the time period of focus in the book. Anyone working in Maputo should be mindful of the delicacy and dangers of this historical minefield, as we can touch or trigger historical narratives without being fully aware of their depth or meaning. |
