If you�re thinking of taking the plunge, if you�re just dying to be your own boss, then reading this book would be a nice dose of realism to innoculate you against your scattered fantasies of business ownership. One of the assumptions that the authors make is that you�re still employed and you�re just daydreaming about quitting. A series of questions you should ask yourself will help determine whether you have what it takes to make it on your own. The anecdotes they use based on the real experiences of the 300+ entrepreneurs they interviewed are almost always relevant and insightful. They walk you through your mission statement, your analysis of your business environment and competition, and prepare you for what will be the biggest struggle you�ll likely ever have in your life. You�ll need to know more about income tax and accounting than you thought you would. You�re going to need to know what is worth delegating and what isn�t. You�ll have a crisis pretty much every day you�re in business, but books like this help you prepare for the worst and they provide evidence that you�re not the only schmuck in the world who confidently invested all their time and money into a company and went bankrupt because you were TOO successful. (That was an entertaining chapter!) At just under 250 pages they can�t possibly provide you with enough information to prepare you for everything, but they give you enough advice about partnering, banking, marketing and hiring to give you a leg up. Did you think you could leave your old company behind with a middle-finger salute on your way out? It�s probably better to work even harder during your last months at your old company because they might provide you with your first leads or contracts. Did you think all networking was good networking? Is it possible to be too successful? How do you calculate how much money you�ll need to startup your business? There are oodles of things you probably hadn�t considered that this book will introduce you to. It is a rambling autobiographical story about the author�s travels in the Middle East as she searches for some kind of meaning to life. I found it difficult to follow and once finished, I still wasn�t sure of the point she was trying to make.
