Review # 1 was written on 2019-06-21 00:00:00 Steven Feemster The book is poorly named. From the start the cover contains conflicting information about the content. Are these the best comics of the century or are these the funniest cartoons of all time? Editor, please pick just one. I can help you. They are not the funniest of all time nor even the best of the century. I'd like to see the 19,900 comics that were rejected so you could come up with these 100. What I hope the editor meant was these are the best comic strips of recent memory. Why not just say that? Some of the Best Comic Strips of Recent Memory. Yes some of them are and some of these I've read before. And yes, some were funny. Like the Sid Harris cartoon on page 192 or any of the Calvin and Hobbs. Four stars for the cartoons and their artists.

Review # 2 was written on 2008-08-14 00:00:00 John Howell Jr The 100 "best" comics? Of the whole CENTURY? Really? Suffice to say I disagree. I'm not sure I cracked a smile once. Even allowing for the fact that no two people have the same sense of humor, this seemed like a lackluster collection. I got the feeling that in 1995 someone at a publishing company said to his boss, "Hey, guess what! 1995 is the one hundredth anniversary of the comic strip!" And the boss assigned a summer intern to identify 100 comics that could be reprinted with minimal copyright permission. Not only were the selected cartoons only marginally funny (sometimes), not one of them was older than about 1965. So apparently 70 of the 100 available years of comics yielded no laughs at all. Lame.
