Background Esteban Delgado Bernal (1912-89), aka Esteban (de) Sanlúcar, born in the same year as Sabicas, was one of the best flamenco guitarists of his generation and influenced many players from the next, such as Juan Serrano and Mario Escudero. He recorded with the top singers of his day, including Mairena, Canelejas, Antonio El Sevillano and Valderrama; but, along with many other artists (such as the aforementioned Sabicas), he fled Spain at the outset of the Civil War, establishing a good concert career in South America and finally settling in Buenos Aires. His name vanished from the Spanish flamenco world, except among a few old-timers. Mario Escudero, however, continued to play his pieces; and apparently taught two of them ' Panaderos Flamencos and Mantilla(s) de Feria ' to the young Paco de Lucía during the latter's crucial trip to New York. Paco recorded both of them on Fantasía Flamenca ' and Esteban's music was back in demand again. He never made many solo recordings, and in fact I'm only aware of two albums: Flamenco! (RCA 130 204), now long deleted, with 8 tracks that run 23 minutes; and another with the same title and cover picture but with a different number (LPM 3209? Hard to make out), and apparently a run-time of 40 minutes. Individual solos, however, show up on many flamenco guitar anthologies, such as Maestros de la Guitarra Flamenca. There is also a tribute album by Oscar Herrero featuring many of Esteban's pieces. Contents of this book The present compilation, produced by Esteban's longtime friend Manolo Yglesias, comes with a CD of the pieces played by Manolo, and is clearly a labour of love. There are several photos of Esteban at different ages, including some with the author and friends such as Andrés Batista. There are also a modest and charming account of his own life by Esteban; a summary of the author's career, and his expressions of thanks; and, at the end, several pages of facsimiles ' of Esteban's birth certificate, and of many fascinating concert flyers from the early part of his career. All of the above appear in English, French and Spanish. The music The major portion of the book consists of transcriptions, into both staff notation and tablature, of the following: • Perfil Flamenco (Zapateado) • El Castillo de Xauén (Danza Mora) • Aromas del Puerto (Farruca) • Primavera Andaluza (Danza) • Horizonte de Málaga (Fantasía) • Panaderos Flamencos (Panaderos) • Panaderos Flamencos II (Panaderos) • Mantilla de Feria (Fantasía) There is also an explanation of signs, in the three above-mentioned languages. The fingering is very complete. Summary This is a magnificent job, and I can't image a better tribute to its subject. My congratulations to Sr. Yglesias.
