Keane, Nancy. The Big Book of Children's Reading Lists: 100 Great, Ready-to-Use Book Lists for Educators, Librarians, Parents and Children, Libraries Unlimited, 288 pgs., readers' advisory reference source. Description: Nancy Keane has compiled 100 readers' advisory lists to help teachers, librarians and parents find books for children. The lists are grouped around school subjects, genre/themes and character/values. Each chapter is further divided by age group. Review: Keane's annotated bibliography is ambitious in its scope and will assist a wide variety of users. Educators will easily find books that tie into school subjects, while parents will find books about specific values, genres and topics. The book is easy to use, with a complete table of contents and index. A full 12 pages of bookmarks are provided for librarians, emblazoned with sample book lists to hand out to readers. These bookmarks are mostly, "if you liked...then you'll like..." lists and cover popular topical requests, such as horse books or treasure hunt books. Librarians and their patrons alike will enjoy the suggestions. Each bibliographic entry provides a full citation, as well as a one or two sentence description of each book. While the pithy descriptions adequately summarize each book's contents, they are not evaluative. It would be helpful for all users of this book to know a bit about the strengths and weaknesses of the materials. While we can assume that Keane only included good books in her bibliography, it would be nice to know why they were included. Professional Reviews: Johnson, Jamie. Reference & User Services Quarterly, Summer 2007. Johnson praised this book for its wide coverage and for the fact that the lists all contain materials published within the last decade. I agree that the up-to-date nature of the lists is a strength. Because it is so current, it would also make a good resource for collection development. Glantz, Shelley. Library Media Connection, Jan 2007. Glantz does not think that the book is particularly timely. She states, "although the books contained in the lists were published over a period of many years, all of them were in print at the time of writing." I tend to agree more with Johnson. In the world of books, 10 years is a fairly short amount of time.

Title: Keane, N. J. (2006). The big book of children's reading lists: 100 great, ready-to-use book lists for educators, librarians, parents, and children. Westport, Conn.: Libraries Unlimited. Name: Brittany Herrera Type of Reference: Bibliography Call Number: REF028.5 Description: This list of children book is divided into seven different genres. These include "Character and Values," "Literary Elements," "Family," "Genre," "Subjects," "Themes," and "Readalikes." This bibliography can be useful to educators or students searching for a book on a general topic! Review: Keane uses her vast knowledge of children's literature to create book lists for children K-8th grade. They are broken into seven parts that are subdivided into subject areas: "Character and Values," "Literary Elements," "Family," "Genre," "Subjects," "Themes," and "Readalikes." Each entry includes the title, author, publisher, publication date, number of pages, an annotation, Lexile level when available, and interest level by grade or age range. The easily reproducible lists will be useful for curriculum and collection development as well as for interesting book displays. This volume is meant to serve as an extension of The Big Book of Children's Reading Lists (Libraries Unlimited, 2006). All titles were in print as of August 2011. A great resource to have when an entire class needs a book on a specific topic. Citation Review: McGrath, R.
