Full disclousre: my friend and fellow slammer Geoff Hewitt wrote this book. I think it is light, easy to understand, and full of useful tips for anyone (especially educators) thinking of trying out their hand at a slam. His humor, experience, and artistry generally shine through. The DVD is an excellent bonus, and gives the reader a fuller idea of what a spoken word performance looks like. The beatboxing sample is quite entertaining. It's brevity can be a little underwhelming a times, though. A student of slam will probably look for Glazner's "Poerty Slam" or its equivalent for more in-depth history and slam strategies. All in all, a very good buy for teachers and (aspiring) poets. Worth a read for the curious. The author certainly could use the money and the exposure.

I am trying to be brave and use slam poetry in my classroom. This book is very helpful.
