My 5th grade daughter wrote this book report on Methuselah's Gift. She loves many books, especially Narnia, the Little House books, and the Doll People books, but this is her very, very favorite series of all. Mary Edgren, if you are out there, there is a little Upright fan here who (along with her family) would love another! A Bible in a Tree: A Book Report on Methuselah’s Gift Why would there be a Bible in a tree full of raccoons? This happens in a book called Methuselah’s Gift by Mary Elizabeth Edgren. Methuselah’s Gift is my very, very favorite book. I like it because the characters are unique and funny, and it also teaches lessons about pleasing God. After a forest fire, a family of raccoons finds a new home. The house is near a church, “the big house,” and at the big house the raccoons make friends with “the little upright” (a little girl), and she gives them a Bible. They already knew about “the Maker,” but they did not know that he came to earth as an upright and died for the uprights. Now the raccoons try to be nice to their enemies and tell them the good news. When a hunter comes to the woods, Methuselah (the oldest raccoon) needs to decide whether to save himself or his enemy. I really like the characters in this book. Tidy Paw is the mother raccoon, and she always wants everything to be neat. She complains about Posie being dirty after the whole forest burned down. Posie, the sister in the raccoon family, loves flowers and loves God. She is always making wreathes out of flowers. She gets mad at the humans because she thinks that they are going to hurt Jesus because of the crown of thorns on the table, so she puts the crown of flowers that was on her head there and runs away with the crown of thorns. Furry Ball, the youngest raccoon, is a bouncing ball of energy who is always getting into trouble. Once he locks himself in the church. He ends up in the manger with the pretend baby Jesus on Christmas Eve! Another thing I like about this book is that it teaches lessons. It reminds me that the Maker always provides. When the raccoons lose their home to the forest fire, they find an even better place to live. When they are low on food, the little upright gives them some apples. This book teaches that Christians should be kind to their enemies because Jesus died for all of us. The raccoons save Waddler from a trap, even though Waddler is their enemy and it is dangerous. The book shows what love is when they keep being nice to Furry Ball no matter how much trouble he is. Also, Methuselah sacrifices for Rabid, the leader of the bad gang of raccoons, a little like Jesus sacrificed for us. I recommend this book to everyone because it is funny and touching. “There’s lots to do when you serve The Maker,” thinks Posie on the last page of the book. I am glad there is a Bible in a tree full of raccoons.
