The book "Create Your Personal Sacred Text" is a Connection Manual written by psychologist and family therapist, Bobbi L. Parish. The manual takes a gentle approach to the expansion of connection. In this book, Parish recommends a research-oriented connection practice (i.e. looking into the sacred texts of this world for inspiration), and discusses the importance of Intent to Awaken, discipline, focus, personal care, perseverance, flexibilities, openness to things outside our comfort zones, and the development of Receptive Seeking as a way to heal connection. This manual is useful for those who are frightened by the prospect of Connection, who have had Nadir Experiences that make them wary of it, or those who prefer a softer approach to the expansion of connection than is provided by visualizations like the Great Invocation, and other more direct forms of Connection Practice.

This quick afternoon read is aimed at anyone who is even remotely interested to see what lurks beneath a title like Create Your Personal Sacred Text: Develop and Celebrate Your Spiritual Life. You don't have to be scholarly, artistically gifted, or mystically inclined in order to achieve the maximum benefits from this book, in fact, I gave this book four stars mostly for its accessibility to anyone and everyone... as I believe that we all could immeasurably benefit from creating our own sacred texts. Parish provides tips on a myriad of relevant topics such as: How to pull ideas for your text from both sacred and secular sources How to leap from those culled ideas into your more personal territory Various methods you can use for writing your own portions of the text (anyone can do it!) Ideas for how to set up your entries in a meaningful way How to ensure that each entry is timeless and sacred specifically to you How to open to the Spirit using different types of prayer and meditation A nice guided meditation on how to silence your inner critic How to actively use your text as it's being created and once it's finished Safe methods for sharing your text, should you choose. There is also a large section in the middle of the book that introduces the reader to the most important books of many of the world's religions. This section is intended to open up the reader to multiple philosophies. I rated the book with four stars for the presentation of information as geared at its intended audience: those people who are just starting out on finding their own spiritual paths as well as those people who think they "can't write." For my own purposes- as a "writer" who is also a more advanced student of philosophies- I would have rated this book with three stars. I found myself skimming through the portions regarding spiritual book recommendations and writing tips to get to the nuggets of beauty and value still contained within.
