I thought this book provided an insightful, clear, and interesting depiction of Martin Luther King Jr.'s journey from childhood to prominent civil rights leader. I enjoy reading about the Civil Rights movement and admire MLK Jr. greatly. I learned quite a bit from reading this book. It was fun to discover some of the things that influenced him to become invested in this fight for freedom. I had no idea he lost two white best friends due to racial discrimination. His mother once told him that he was just as good as anyone else, and his father's preached about loving all people, even when they are mean. These things were the foundation of his principles. The part that resonated most with me was when he told his mother that he would turn the world upside down --and he did! However, I was most drawn to the story when King said, "I have been to the mountain top, but I must go back to the valley." Though he had made great strides, he knew there was much more work to do. I will carry with me the amount of struggle supporters of this movement had to endure for basic rights. If I were to use this book in the classroom setting I would use it to explore other cultures, being kind to all people, and providing information on the civil rights movement. I would highly recommend this book to others based on its engaging content and real photographs that made the text come alive!

The Heroes of American History series includes the story of Martin Luther King, Jr. Champion of Civil Rights by Edith Hope Fine. This series will encourage the young student to delve into the study of biographies of famous people. Ms. Edith Hope Fine's book about Martin Luther King, Jr. is an inspiring book detailing the life and events surrounding Mr. King's involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. The author presents well the details of the peaceful approach to change that was near and dear to Dr. King. The large type makes this an easy read for young readers and middle readers alike. Pictures of the actual events accompany the text to make the information real for the reader. Each chapter is a concise explanation of an important event in the life of Dr. King as well as in the history of the Civil Rights movement in American history. This will be an appropriate book for young student's reports and period studies. This is a good book to add to the ACS Library biography section.
