Review # 1 was written on 2015-07-31 00:00:00 Andrew Dodds As a historical sampler, "The Art of Beadwork" takes the reader on a satisfying, if light, tour of some of the great beading civilizations of history both ancient and recent, from the earliest archaeological evidence of beads in pre-history to the modern artistry of India, China, and Africa. However, in each section, a different artist was asked to create a seed-bead project, with patterns and instructions, "inspired by" the historical style of beadwork covered. While the projects indeed are well-diagrammed and include an impressive array of beading techniques, the finished pieces are just - I'm sorry to say it - really ugly. There is not a single thing in here that I would wear. It seems like each artist tried to outdo themselves with how abstract and avant garde they could get with their interpretations, and the resulting jewelry and accessories are boxy, angular, chaotic, and in some cases even completely impractical. And since the projects take up more than half of the book, I can't recommend this as a purchase. Check it out from the library, or find a better scholarly or art book on the history of beading. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-10-31 00:00:00 charles dye This is a fantastic must-read for anyone that loves beads. Valerie Hector has created a wonderful tour through the history of beadwork across the globe, with a special enthusiasm that can only come from a passionate beader. |
