Uncovering the stories behind the genesis of famous band names from the sixties through today, Greg Metzer compiles an engaging reference text for the casual music fan. The selection criteria for the inclusion of the 240 band names discussed is largely based on recognition and popularity, according to the preface. Entries, alphabetically arranged by band name, include the year the group was formed, the names of all relevant members of the group, and the group's best known hit. In addition to anecdotal information about the origins of each band's name, each entry contains the historical lineage and evolution of individual band names (e.g. "The Supersonic Bangs" became "The Bangs" became "The Bangles"). This information is also available through two appendixes listing previous names and names considered and rejected for each band. Of particular strength is the inclusion of an index, providing easy access to specific band members, geographic locations, record companies, and band names. Rock Band Origins is a well-constructed resource written for a specific audience, which Metzer identifies in the introduction as someone at a cocktail party spouting off about his or her knowledge of certain musical acts. Within this context, the serious scholar can excuse the questionable authority of the sources used for research. For example, the source cited for the entry on Chaka Khan was the inaccessible website www.seand85.tripod.com. This is a highly entertaining reference work on band name etymologies but not the most scholarly of titles. It serves as an ideal source for music fans who ever wondered how some of the most popular bands in history adopted their namesake.

For being a book about how rock bands made thier names, it wasnt too bad. Only true music fans would like this book due to there being alot of ild and not-so famous bands as well. I recommend it to the twenty to thirty year old rockers who have listened to a band for years but has never thought about what the band means. My favourite one: Pearl Jam, named after one of the bandmate's grandma's homemade jelly.
