David is trying to ready me for a summer trip to his home state by priming the pump with juvenile nonfiction. This book was an alright introduction, albeit with a few glaring error, the most egregious stating that west of the Cascades, "temperatures change little throughout the year", whereas Eastern Oregon sees temperatures that "dip below freezing in the winter and average 72 in the summer". Newsflash: Western Oregon also has varied seasons. According to my sources, (David and his mother, who sends post-it annotated photographs) Salem summer temps can get up to the 90s and on occasion in the winter, it snows. So pftthhhhh, Gretchen Bratvold. Anyway, the photos were helpful in getting me excited. The Smith Rock State Park in the Columbia Plateau looks awesome. I hope we get to drive out to Eastern Oregon at least one day.

Qualifying exams, intrigue and harsh punishments, life in the Forbidden City can be very hard!
