Age Range - Intermediate Meet My Grandmother She's a United States Senator by Lisa Tucker McElroy takes us through the job of Dianne Feinstein, a US Senator from California. The book is narrated by her six year old granddaughter Eileen Feinstein Mariano. Eileen tells us about her grandmother "Gagi" who works in Washington DC and has an office on Capitol Hill. She meets with her staffers, fellow senators and even the President to make laws that will help the state of California. Eileen also tells us what Gagi likes to do with her free time, such as visit places in San Francisco, draw flowers and spend time with her granddaughter. The illustrations in this book are all real pictures depicting the life of Dianne Feinstein. I think that this is a wonderful way to teach children about United States government. The author takes you through the life of a woman in the senate. This book helps to illuminate some of the important work that senators do for the states they represent. For children who are interested in careers in the government, this is a book that they can learn from.

A sweet picture book written from the perspective of Senator Dianne Feinstein's granddaughter describing what it is that her grandmother does and a bit about what it took for her to get there. The only downside for me was the granddaughter's continual referral to Ms. Feinstein as Gagi, over and over again. To the point that I started to question, what was her name again? Well not really, but I'm sure it would cause confusion with this books target audience.
