A good police procedural set in London in the early 60's. The story has a large South African involvement as it revolves around the diamond trade. Although I don't believe that the book is racist in itself, the story is about racism in a way and there is quite a lot of racist language used by some of the characters which would be unacceptable nowadays. Apartheid was still in full swing in South Africa at this time and there are quite a few black protagonists in the story. Superintendent Traill is a likeable character and the action all seemed believable. I enjoyed it.

The title refers to the wimp protagonist of this excruciatingly long-winded mystery. Keating writes well but there is not a single likable character in this tale and oft-times I felt myself rooting for the Detective's detractors; he needed a swift kick in the arse.
