To me this is the perfect F1 book as it aims to please all audiences who have an active interest in the subject. As Hill says at the beginning, if you get bored with the text you can just look at all the pretty pictures. Fortunately, the text is just as fascinating to read as the pictures are to admire. The book is about the same size and shape of a calendar but its intentions are clear, to make the text and pictures share the space they occupy. Formula One is a very visual sport so it's perfectly understandable to see what the book is the way it is. The book itself is an autobiography of Damon Hill's 1998 year with Jordan and some of the events leading up to that season. He had previously done one on the 1994 and 1996 seasons, which I have a copy of the 96 one. Next to the 1996 edition this 1998 one is better as Hill talks about events and other feelings here, not just what goes out of the track. Hill's career was full of so many ups and downs that as an autobiography it works very well. Near the end of the book he talks about his prospects for 1999 and motivation as the team confidently moves forward…. while the team does, Hill's 99 season was not one many will look upon with fond memories. Overall a great read and one recommended to all who wants to look into the mind of a driver as he goes about a season in the pinnacle of motor racing. I hope Hill writes a career long autobiography one day, which he eluded to doing in a recent Motorsport Magazine article. But this is a great book to pick up in the mean time.

This is an interesting series of reflections by Damon Hill on his first year with Mugen-Honda Jordan. He not only talks about the challenges he faced after his World Championship year - being dropped by Williams, choosing a team he might help to victory - but also gives his thoughts on motor-racing in general - what motivates drivers, what's important in the sport. It also has plenty of glossy pictures if that's all you're interested in.
