Review # 1 was written on 2010-11-04 00:00:00 Romana Pourova does harmony between public opinion and policy equate to a healthy democracy? that is Soroka and Wlezien's essential research question. many facets of the relationship between public opinion and policy are explained here - ie. is public opinion stable and therefore viable enough to serve as a foundation for policy? what if public opinion is not responsive to policy? should the policy still be accordingly representative? there are many more aspects of the public opinion, policy, and democracy relationship explored here but the neat thing is that S&W roll this into a machine they call the "thermostatic model" which helps us measure the health of a democracy. really brilliant stuff, especially if you're interested government's relationship with its people. however, whether or not a democracy is representative here is the key; Soroka and Wlezien aren't looking for ways to determine if a government is corrupt or not. note to self, buy a copy of this. |
