A useful overview. For my purposes, the main new information were several references to Munich's Cardinal Faulhaber which I can use in my novel-in-progress. Faulhaber is interesting. In the 1920s, he was relatively supportive of Jews in Germany, at least to the extent of opposing persecution while encouraging conversion. He was a member of the group called "Friends of Israel" until it was disbanded by the Vatican. The way his behavior was twisted by Cardinal Pacelli (later Pius XII) is illustrative of the manner in which the Vatican forced its bishops to collude with Hitler before and during the Holocaust, totally indifferent, at least in their public acts, to the persecution and later murder of millions of Jews ... so long as Church property and other assets were not affected. The more I read, the more complicit and guilty I think the Catholic Church was, and for which, in my emerging judgment, it has never properly atoned. It is hypocritical in the extreme to claim to be a major moral force in the world but to sit silently by in the face of the Nazi horror, and then, after it was over and millions had been burned in the ovens, to steadfastly keep hidden the records of what the Church did and did not do. I am looking forward to showing all of this in my new novel. I am developing the character of a young priest who be horrified by the Vatican's and thus the German bishop's actions or lack thereof. The interactions of this priest with my main German character, if I can write it the way I hope to, will be dramatic and heartbreaking. ... LEW ...

FABULOUS review for the AP test. Though, it was missing some stuff that appeared on the AP test. Then again, I didn't remember reading anything about those in my US History Textbook either.
