If you're wanting a factual book about Cleveland's lighthouses, along with tons of great historic pics, this is worth a read ;)

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS. Like most titles I've read in Arcadia's Images of America Series, this one doesn't have the best narrative for a casual reader like me. It delivers a lot of chronology. But somehow the story-telling spark that makes a history come to life was missing (at least for me). It is also chock full of details that go beyond my interest level -- such as lens power for the various incarnations of lights in the Cleveland harbor, or exact mapping of landmarks. But I'm sure these details are just what the intent history reader wants. I like the abundance of photos, though there's a lot of repetition of imagery (how many angles do i want to see this or that tower from?)Layout, also, is uninspired for a book with so many visuals. Take-away: maritime industry was incredibly important to Cleveland's founding and early growth. Not only did Cleveland become a trade link with the Atlantic, thanks to the canal. It also helped in the transport of regionally obtained natural resources. Natural add-ons included a healthy ship-building industry (at one time) as well as a leisure industry (passengers taking steamers to other cities for important occasions such as honeymoons). Author says that due to Lake Erie's shallowness, it's more prone to severe icing than other Great Lakes; as a result of this and related weather factors, it has had more shipwrecks than the other Great Lakes.
