Review # 1 was written on 2018-04-15 00:00:00 Kenji Akiyama An excellent overview of Richmond's LGBT history with moving photographs and attention to detail. I was very intrigued by the format, since being an image-heavy book meant that this book focused on material history that could be photographed or otherwise captured in image, such as physical spaces, events, printed materials, art, etc, as well as personalities, with portraits (or mugshots) available. While in some ways, such a non-linear narrative made it more difficult to establish trends, the book's organization, as well as the blurbs beside the images helped establish a good picture of Richmond's LGBT community within the last century. It is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in Richmond's and Virginia's LGBT history. I only wish there was a bibliography available for future researchers for information outside of Marschak's lived experiences. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-05-03 00:00:00 Kenn Geary It was rather boring but I still like the pictures. It seemed like it was the same thing, page after page. I think it would have been nice if the definition of early Snohomish could have broadened to say, 1950. Perhaps images of how the town changed with the depression and WWII would have made it more interesting. Also, my complaint about these Images of America are always about the white people. I want to hear more about the tribes, even if there are not many pictures. I do want to give kudos to the author for mentioning the Chinese ppl though. Of the IoA books I've read, this is the first time I've heard them mentioned. But I still want to know more, even the stuff the ppl of these towns are embarrassed about today. The true image of America is not as one-sided as shown. |
