Summary: "What Are Mountains?" is a nonfiction book introducing and educating early students on one type of landform, mountains. It begins with introducing a mountain through an image and goes on to clarify parts that make up a mountain. The summit is the top, foothills are the small hills at the bottom, mountain ranges are a group of mountains, and some mountains are volcanoes! The book gives an example of a real mountain in Alaska, Mount McKinley; it is the tallest mountain in North America. Evaluation: I think this book is very descriptive, visual, and informational. It gives students the opportunity to navigate a Table of Contents, read through descriptive material, and investigate a Glossary for more information. I enjoyed the knowledge gained about mountains by reading this text and would recommend this book to 1st or 2nd graders learning about details of the Earth's landforms. Teaching Idea: Lisa Trumbauer, the author, has provided students with an easy-to-read description of the parts of a mountain. She has integrated images with arrows to clearly indicate what part she is describing and discusses the parts individually allowing students to connect the words to the related image. I would consider utilizing Trumbauer's book in my classroom to enhance my students learning of landforms, specifically mountains. In first grade, students are to learn the different types of landforms (mountains, plains, glaciers, plateaus, etc.) and their corresponding parts. I will use this book to introduce, describe, and locate the parts of a mountain to encourage my students in recognizing and locating the parts on their own. After the reading of this books, my students would be challenged to describe and locate all parts on an image of a moutain.
