The nonfiction story I read was called, "Kwanzaa" by Lola M. Schaefer. This story is for children who are in preschool to first grade. Kwanzaa is a story that discusses the holiday Kwanzaa that is celebrated by the African American culture. This story discusses all of the special events that occur during this holiday. I would rate this story a three. I think this story is very educational and helpful on teaching children about Kwanzaa. This story goes in detail about the creator of Kwanzaa, the dates Kwanzaa is celebrated, the seven symbols, and so much more. The illustrations show many symbols, people who celebrate Kwanzaa, the foods that are eaten, and the joy that this holiday brings for many. The illustrations are useful because they give visuals for children to observe, which I think makes it very beneficial. This main idea is wonderful because it teaches children about what different cultures do on their favorite holiday and tradition. The language was written perfectly for this age level. It even has a word bank on the back to learn what certain words meanings are. I would definitely use this story to teach about Kwanzaa to discuss what other cultures celebrate during the December and January months.

Simple text paired with full color photos introduce young readers to Kwanzaa. The founder, symbols, and date range are all included. The seven principles are listed, though not fully described. PreK-2.
