This slender volume explores depictions of boys and girls in elementary school books (during the 1970s). The thesis of this work is that (Page 7): "The message from the readers that is beamed to small girls is very different from that aimed at small boys." The book is based on an examination of 134 elementary school texts (from 14 different publishers). The conclusion? Gender stereotypes proliferate; subtle forms of discrimination regarding gender are portrayed in the books. A useful study in its time. . . .
