This is an excellent book. You probably either need to be interested in political theory or at least in the Founding Fathers and their political theory. Though it uses the founders as a model of what political theory does, this is really about how you should go about the process. Dr. Lutz was my professor at the University of Houston (excellent). He is attempting to place political philosophy (but specifically an American type) in the greater political science process. I think he follows Voeglin. I will just give two quotes. "The relationship of theory to ideology is thus such that a theory can be used as an ideology, but theory and ideology are not the same since theory is in some sense always truth seeking, something that by definition ideology cannot be . . " "In other words, American political theory inevitably involves itself with questions concerning a string of concepts . . beginning with the concept most fundamental to democratic theory, popular sovereignty, followed by political participation, political equality, majority rule, individual and minority rights, the common good, political virtue, representation, deliberative processes, "
