Review # 1 was written on 2016-09-22 00:00:00 Crebassa Michel This well-illustrated biography of the artists of Bloomsbury centers around the artistic and personal relationship formed by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, with a major role played by Roger Fry and the Omega Workshops. All of the members of the Bloomsbury circle had fluid sexual relationships, both within their various marriages and circle, and without. Many partnered with both men and women. Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant formed one of the most productive and enduring. You can see the influence they had on each other's painting. Grant was the more successful during his lifetime, although both painters have been out of fashion for some time. I like their work, particularly the results of the first exciting wave of influence from Europe, right before and after the first World War. They also both produced wonderful decorative design--from textiles to pottery--for the Omega Workshops during that time period. None of the Bloomsbury artists broke new ground with their painting, although the Omega Workshops were dynamic and innovative in their application of art to décor. But art doesn't always have to leave the past behind. In their living as well as through their work, the Bloomsbury group moved productively within their own tangled paths.

Review # 2 was written on 2011-06-19 00:00:00 James Rudland This is an excellent book in which Shone discusses not only the art of the Bloomsbury artists but also delves into their backgrounds, relationships, and much more. Definitely a must-read for Bloomsbury and art lovers.
