Review # 1 was written on 2017-09-20 00:00:00 Nicolle Duran In under 100 pages, Eric Hazan takes you to places in the West Bank where you might never be able to go, and shows you how Palestinians are being surrounded by a web of Israeli settlements, fences, checkpoints, exclusive highways, and military facilities. The concept is simple: Hazan travels to three West Bank towns, interviews mayors, merchants, and regular old townspeople, and compiles selected excerpts into this little volume, so that it almost feels like a scrapbook. A frequent theme is the difficulties of the people in getting around: many have troubles making it through checkpoints into neighboring towns, let alone other countries with a better quality of life. Another theme is the Palestinian election that occurred shortly before the notes were taken. Interviewees are often asked to give their opinions of Hamas and Fatah. I was amazed at how many people interviewed had friends or relatives killed or detained by Israeli forces. The amount of effort put forth by Israel to police and fence off West Bank settlements is astounding, and not approved by all Israelis, I should add. Read this book in tandem with David Horovitz's "A Little Too Close to God" to get the perspective of an Israeli who is furious at his country's promotion of such provocative and costly settlements.
