In the end, Cribiore describes a system that's remarkably similar to education in Greece and Rome. I read this one back to back with Debra Hawhee's Bodily Arts and was struck by the similarities (the two texts came out within a year of each other, I believe). The historical work and archaeological work underlying this one is impressive, though--as someone interested more in rhetoric and language than the research methods of historians, Hawhee's book was a bit more moving for me. |
