Review # 1 was written on 2021-01-10 00:00:00 Bruce Guarino Pulled me into a subject about which I know little. Perhaps it was the reference to Serre whose work and taste in mathematics is second to none. The book promises to explain another deep connection between geometry and algebra. Many geometric problems are posed, and solved, in terms of extra structures which are defined on the geometric object. Imagine a vector field on a sphere as a canonical example. In the case where the geometric object is an algebraic variety, Serre developed a theory that some explored deep connection with the algebra of projective modules. This book develops those analogies, and motivates other connections between geometric and algebraic structures. I cannot claim to have mastered the material but this monograph is a pathway into some of the most important work in 20th century math. There are probably less expensive books to explore these themes, but few will be written as clearly and with such grand ambition. |
