I. Ellis W. Hawley, The New Deal and the Problem of Monopoly: A study in economic ambivalence (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1966). A. Synopsis: This book examines the period from 1933 to 1939. It concentrates on the conflict inherent in the FDR economic policy. First it attempts to trace the pattern of conflict. The conflict was between those that wanted a rationalized, government sponsored business commonwealth based on the industrial order, and those that envisioned a democratic collectivism in which the monopoly power of businessmen would be transferred to the state. Secondly this book focuses on the policy making that resulted from this conflict and not the validity or economic merit of the policies involved.

I'm actually re-reading this book as part of an attempt to reconcile my beliefs about the 1930s Depression and New Deal to today's economic situation.
