This is a good collection of essays that I would recommend to anyone interested in this topic. The introduction by Gonzalez is worth reading just on its own. He talks about the diversity of Latino worship in the US, about age and generational issues in immigrant communities that get highlighted in faith communities, about being uncomfortable in Anglo worship. He expands on the idea of mestizaje--the experience of being mestizo, both in its original definition of one who is of Spanish and Indigenous origin, an and in the current context of being Latino in the dominant Anglo culture of the US--and how that affects Latino worship and theology. The other essays are primarily about different forms of Christian denominational or non-denominational worship and how they function differently in a Latino culture than in an Anglo one--Catholic, pentecostal, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist. These vary in quality, since they are different authors, but they all have interesting points. I most liked the ones on Catholicism (good points on Latino elements of), and Pentecostalism (the attraction of a popular, lay-lead, non-creedal relgion). However, I wish there was more discussion of how they compare to each other, rather than just to their Anglo counterparts. The chapters on hymns and resources are specific to people wanting to do/facilitate multicultural worship: actually the whole book is really geared toward that.

Robert Buckman looks at what religion does for people and communities and also where it falls short and why. A readable book. The end result ' Spoiler alert' is that we don't have to worry that atheists are going to ruin the world with their lawless behavior. Sure, a few might, but so have a few ruined peoples' lives due to religious belief. As humans, we should be able to believe whatever we wish as long as our actions are good. Also we need to work on fixing problems on this planet together and not wait for God to take care of it. Both things i can believe in!
