Review # 1 was written on 2008-01-09 00:00:00 Adesh Ramdharry This is a wonderful book that has not gotten the attention it deserves. It is a scholarly book written in the form of a film treatment. While cultural theory clearly animates it, this is not a book intended only or even primarily for academics. It provides a brilliant introduction to the material culture (the look and feel) of everyday life in 1950s Rome. I don't like much of the scholarship on Italian cinema, so I have my students (I teach film studies) read this when we study Fellini. This is a genuinely stimulating, surprising and pleasurable read. |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-03-24 00:00:00 Marie Burdett The scandal took place in 1953 Rome. The book treats the whole thing much as a Fellini filmscript, written in short disjointed scenes, linking (or not) disparate elements to provide a view of a post-war Rome moving into a modern world of instant celebrities and short bursts of fame amid corruption and perhaps ineptitude.
