Review # 1 was written on 2013-09-02 00:00:00 Dick Griebel I read this a few years ago for a Victorian poetry course, and found the articles in this book most useful. They cover a range of topics, including the British Empire and politics, religion, sexuality, gender, medieval or classical references, medicinal practices, and pretty much you can associate with the Victorians. My only complaint is, given this is an anthology, the articles are truncated, and Alison Chapman seems to always abridge the articles just when they become really interesting, leaving the authors' concepts feeling not completely realized. Beyond that, this is a useful companion and a great resource for anyone studying Victorian poetry (or that era in general). |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-10-09 00:00:00 Manuel Morales This book serves as a good seminar in general English studies. The author keeps a light tone throughout, but also incorporates examples that add insight to the topics he discusses. I recommend it for any who want a brief overview of directions they could go in studying the subject. |
