Jonathan Rutherford is a remarkable scholar. His work on masculinity has transformed how researchers in myriad disciplines think about men, women, sex and desire. This book is invested in Freud and Lacan, scholars that are not of interest to me. But the book is outstanding because Rutherford tries to understand the puzzle of heterosexual masculine desire and how the patterns that emerge from it block intimacy, love, relationships and the development of complex and plural modes of being a man. This is a fascinating analysis and - in contemporary Australia - a timely reminder that masculine violence against women not only has a cause, but profound consequences. These consequences are not only to women - causing death, disability and fear - but have an impact on men who are trapped by their excuses, their limitations and their fists.

This book is a very practical how to guide for a young and inexperienced woman thrust into to position of having to manage a home. Parts of it, including the basics of household budgeting, are surprisingly relevant today.
