Good ideas but not substantial enough.. Most of these arguments are ones almost anyone who's been watching India's political scene would be aware of.. This book was part of prescribed readings in an elective course on Business & government in MBA. I was hoping to come across more practical examples on how the current situation could be improved. However, I felt that the author gave some good ideas and then kept on rambling about them for whole chapters. A good read if you are not familiar with the working of India's politics. A tedious one if you are.

The title was misleading. ' A view from the Backbench ' implied an insider's view of the functioning of the parliament. Not so, the book goes on to analyze the well publicized problems hindering India's 7 decade parliamentary system . Having seen politics only in the last 15 years, all of which have been in the coalition mode, it was surprising to learn that the author identifies it as one of the root causes of all problems affecting Indian polity. But fundamentally , as in any organization, the calibre of people populating it is more important than any other factor with respect to performance, and on this point the author only dwells mildly, while looking at the criminalization of the political scene. The author also offers a 10 point program all of which would be difficult to implement. Is there a panacea to all the problems mentioned in the book? I do not think so, but improving the quality of people getting into parliament would be the closest that we get to a cure-all solution. How to go about doing it is a difficult question to answer.
