I give them credit because it is evident that a great deal of work went into the creation of this antique guide. Also, I love antiques, so just to look at the beautiful photographs makes it a worthwhile investment. The drawbacks to a guide like this is that they claim that it makes identification quick and easy. Nothing can be further from the truth. I guess it depends on what they mean by identification and the type of antique you have. Say for example, I want to know what a certain type of porcelain looks like, I can search the name in this guide and have an idea of what it is; however, this in no way guarantees what I may have or buy will be authentic. There are imitations abound, and many have fake marks or stamps on them; although, I myself have yet to find a fake piece with an identical mark to the authentic one. That's usually the first thing that gives the reproduction or fake away. Also, unless a person is an expert appraiser, dealer, or avid collector, he or she most likely wouldn't be able to identify an authentic piece from a fake. You can look in this book and see all sorts of antiques, but it's usually very difficult to know if what you have is the actual piece in the book just because it is similar or identical in many ways. Also, many of the pieces photographed in these types of books come from private collections, and if they are extremely rare, your chances of finding them are probably very slim. If they are one of a kind, you most likely won't find them, unless they are housed in an antique store or museum, were somehow lost or given away, or you know who owns them, but that doesn't mean you will ever get your hands on them. Another thing is that all listed pieces do not have photographs. There might be one main photograph of a particular item, followed by a list of similar pieces or other parts of the set, but they have no photos. On the other hand, if you already own an authentic piece and want an idea of how much it might be worth (often has a lot to do with how much someone is willing to pay for it), a guide such as this one would come in handy.
