I would like to call this book a character study that happens to contain a murder mystery. The major characters are likable hard working New Englanders, the plot is reasonable and believable, and the murderer is identified through detective work totally without forensics. This is a refreshing change from the modern requirement for the use of DNA profiles, trace evidence, and fingerprints! A young man, alienated from his wealthy kinfolk, seeks employment at a New England marble quarry. By hard work and dedication he works his way up through the ranks to become assistant to the owner. Along the way he falls in love with the boss' daughter. But alas young man's wealthy cousin is found murdered, and one of the clues found at the scene of the crime is the cousin's will naming young man as heir to the fortune. Other clues also implicate young man in the crime. It requires old fashioned detective work to solve the mystery.

Free download available at Project Gutenberg. Opening lines: It is close upon daybreak. The great wall of pines and hemlocks that keep off the west wind from Stillwater stretches black and indeterminate against the sky. At intervals a dull, metallic sound, like the guttural twang of a violin string, rises form the frog-invested swamp skirting the highway. Suddenly the birds stir in their nests over there in the woodland, and break into that wild jargoning chorus with which they herald the advent of a new day. In the apple-orchards and among the plum-trees of the few gardens in Stillwater, the wrens and the robins and the blue-jays catch up the crystal crescendo, and what a melodious racket they make of it with their fifes and flutes and flageolets!
