What a poet! Everything we long for poetry is in Hopkins's works. Beauty, passion, sorrow and hope. Most of all his poetry is very original. I have never read poems like this. Also, Hopkins's absolute trust to Jesus moved me deeply. When he was writing "Sonnets of Desolation ", his heart was surely close to the heart of Jesus in Gethsemane.

Very little in literature gives me more pleasure than reading the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins. I once knew The Wreck of the Deutchland by heart and have delighted in kestrels, poplars and fast moving streams. I once spent a long time and a lot more money than I could afford in a pub in Didsbury with Anthony Easthope debating whether he was really a poet at all. I was a fan, Easthope wasn't and there were few minds harder to shift in Manchester in those days. A bloody good tustle though and I wish I could remember the name of the pub. Anthony has gone and my love of Hopkins remains.
