The Polly Brewster books definitely trade more in the racist stereotypes of the early 20th century than comparable series I've read, with the uncomfortable addition of Polly's business being tricking country folk out of their family antiques. It's a shame, because when looked at in context of other girls' series of the time, the writing is much fresher and more original. Speaking of like series, this is the second where the heroine has put off her very eager, marriage-minded suitor in favor of her work. It's an interesting trend, especially since the girls' series of the 40s will begin to reverse it. Polly, it should be noted, is much more bold in her declaration of independence than Marjorie Dean, despite this book being three years before Marjorie Dean, Post-Graduate, when she tackles a similarly enthusiastic suitor.

Cleverly written and entertaining, this is the nostalgic look at a young paperboy discovering the entrepreneurial world and the lessons within it. I thought "how can such a simple story be an effective allegory for the business process?" Well, it is! Truth is simple, not easy. Any business does well to remain as close to the simple truth of their goals and the means toward attaining them. People are constantly trying to "reinvent the wheel" in business rather than acquiring the knowledge PLUS the wisdom learned the hard way from those who have gone before us. Perhaps it is because we are a bit arrogant, believing too much in our own uniqueness. This book helped me to review the effectiveness of traditional good business practices and the timeless benefits therein.
