Review # 1 was written on 2013-02-12 00:00:00 Joseph Egolf This is one of the quite-a-few dinosaur books that I bought when my son was young. He, like me, was fascinated by these marvellous creatures, and we spent hours poring over our collection of books. Now his nephew is likewise fascinated, so much so that I felt it quite appropriate to have a dinosaur book as part of his H U G H Challenge (Hugh is his middle name). Of course, the fact that I didn't own any children's book that began with the letter "U" was the primary reason for choosing this, but that's by the by. James had to know the names of every single dinosaur pictured in this book. That wasn't necessarily easy. The book is written with the text being most important. Well, that's not entirely true. Perhaps I should say that it's an illustrated book, as opposed to many dinosaur books which are primarily about the pictures even when they might have a great deal of text. So, I had to go searching through the text for the names of the creatures in the pictures - good use of my scanning skills, but sometimes a little confusing for James (especially when I had to go back a page or two), who isn't yet a sophisticated reader. He's only had 9 weeks of schooling (not counting kindergarten) and probably 99.99999% of the books that he's had read to him have had the words for the pictures all on the same page. How to judge this book then? I have never read it, so I can't give a real assessment. But the pictures are excellent - not the stock standards of so many dinosaur books - and Rupert and now James love it for that. So four stars is appropriate. |
