Review # 1 was written on 2015-04-27 00:00:00 John Frost Francks comes across as a superlative pre-War historian of Japanese society and culture. The pre-Meji consumption discussions are genuinely fascinating, and a joy to read. But the central non-argument of the central argument is becomes more apparent as the years progress. The 1950s-80s are blithely glossed over at points. This is disappointing given how important the consumption discussion is to a macro-economic understading of Japan's economic miracle, bubble era and lost decades. Perhaps I was hoping for too much argument. The description and narrative are great. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-03-16 00:00:00 George Spontak Concise overview of different aspects of the rise of the Japanese consumer. I think her discussions about how the Japanese home and Japanese food and drink evolved over time -- integrating appropriated aspects of life from around the world while retaining a unique Japanese interpretation -- are her best. |
