I did not like the layout or the tone of this book. My problem with the layout is the fact many Scientists and Artists discussed in it were from before the Renaissance Period. I realize that Science and Art both build upon themselves over time, but if you are going to put "Renaissance" in the title than I feel you should stick within that time frame. Complicating matters is the fact that the book jumps all over the time table in a single page. One paragraph might be about the 2nd Century and the next one about the late 1400's.My only positive about the book's layout was the decent amount of color plates included in each chapter. Now as to the tone of the book...there is no doubt that the Church as an institution did wrong by Scientists and Artists alike in the past. But there are also positive examples of Christians in the Scientific field. But you will not find anything in this book except negative talks of imprisonment, humiliation and death. Bottom Line --- Skip using this book to teach about Science in the Renaissance Period. There are better balanced texts out there that present both sides of the story equally.

An excellent "intro" for research for the young student. January shows an excellent correlation to how religion influenced science during the renaissance.
