Review # 1 was written on 2019-01-04 00:00:00 Ronald Fernandez American Economic History eternally fascinates; all superlatives aside, it may be said that it was the first modern economy. That fact, this book describes emphatically in its description of the country's initial rise to economic dominance. In that time, among others, we shall see the rise of the corporation and the start of ubiquitous advertisement--anyone reading this, no doubt, tries to escape by adblocking, yet, we never fully succeed. Is there a magical formula within? As Prof. Klein tells it, natural endowments+government policy+citizen outlook+entrepreneurial genius=American greatness. This book is that rare breed of the non-fiction genre, impossible to put down. It is written with verve, and its rollicking pace brings to life the era it describes. I found it went a long way to explaining why we're all Americans now. |
