Review # 1 was written on 2011-07-23 00:00:00 Dustin Metz This is a book that demands several visits. Nick Thomas outlines the basic assumptions of both history and anthropology in such a way that he exposes the great difficulty faced by those who attempt to draw on both by arguing that adding the past to ethnography is insufficient because ethnography, anthropology's 'data source', tends to construct itself as being out of time. Historical anthropology requires more than anthropologists talking about the past, and historians talking about 'the other', but requires a fundamental revision of how those of us who draw on both traditions work. This is a short book - 130 or so pages - but demanding, and each time I revisit I get something new. |
