Wow. I bought this in 1996, judging by the old-fashioned, manual-carbon-imprint credit card receipt in the back of it. Still nurturing my own doubt about my Mennonite upbringing, it was a title I could not resist. I breezed through about the first half, but it got more dense and scholarly as the book (and the author's career) progressed. Meanwhile my parenthood progressed and I had less time to read. I enjoyed the whole book, though, once I found time to finish it. It's divided into three Acts, but I think it reads more like two books in the same series. The first "book": mission story, introduction to Chaco culture, and personal crisis/resolution should be accessible to almost anyone. The 2nd "book" continues the personal narrative, while providing a window into the anthropological movements and developments in the 60s through the 80s. This part will be interesting to people who enjoy reading science literature from fields outside their own expertise. My opinion anyway! :)

pleasant surprise, this book actually lived up to my hopes for the title! Only the chapter on his academic publications fell flat.
