Review # 1 was written on 2009-09-21 00:00:00 Jonathan Scranton This has a fairly narrow subject range: the history of the viol until the end of the 17c. Demonstrates the Spanish vihuela origins quite convincingly with numerous iconographical examples as well as the sparse historical documentation on the subject. Origin, construction, and early repertoire are equally well dealt with, as is the history of the instrument in Spain, its spread to Italy and ways northern to Germany, France and England. Like other books in the series, it does suffer from poorly reproduced images in the text, which are dark and difficult to make out at times. But the text is of first rate interest. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-08-15 00:00:00 robert grimes Chris Bohjalian's great talent is to bring his readers into the lives of ordinary people at the moment that those lives begin to unravel. With great compassion and suspense, he demonstrates the struggles that ensue. You embrace every character in their very human nature. In THE LAW OF SIMILARS he introduces you to yet another moral dilemma; alternative medicine, specifically, homeopathy. How much are we responsible for our own decisions for our health? When things go wrong how far will we go to desperately protect someone we love? |
