Review # 1 was written on 2012-08-02 00:00:00 Veronica Serrato I grew up in India in the 80s and my review of the book is likely to be influenced by that. There is a dilemma among those who have grown up in the pre-globalization India. As kids we didn't shy away from blaming the British rule for poor economic conditions of India but as grown ups we were happy to use our English advantage in the global arena. The book would be of academic interest to those who can see this dilemma, and of immense practical help to those who have felt it any point. The book shows various forces at work in India - caste, education, freedom of natives and that of Eurasians. It doesn't provide as much detail of the particular laws, but details the effects of various laws and their reception in India as well as England. It often points out the complete reversals of policies in India, in response to the forces that were largely uncomprehended by the rulers of India. The book doesn't attempt to present a general theory of independence but instead, uses pages to exhibit data from various archives to illustrate trends that the author recognizes. It takes personal histories and puts them in the context of social conditions of the time. I would definitely recommend the book to a general reader because of its accessibility and research.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-09-19 00:00:00 Daniel Hirsch Gives a great perspective on how easy it could be for terrorists to get their hands on nuclear material from one of the former Soviet secret nuclear cities, where international efforts are now trying to warehouse the stuff. A short, gripping book, very illuminating and hard to put down.
